There is not one answer for any decorating question. This house in the Mission featured in Dwell Magazine was finished with a Micaceous Iron Oxide from Sydney Harbour Paint Company. We used Sydney Harbour Paints when the company first started in Sydney. The architect/client was open to suggestions. He liked having the same paint finish as the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Experience is the Key
Often what is missing is the ability to find a solution that exists between what is available . In this Presidio Heights Mid Century we were asked to help find "the" color for the stain. Working with my stain provider we customized the formula. We also did the interior paint finish and conversion varnish finish on cabinetry.
There is no secret
Stripped all the paint from mahogany panels in a Sealiff residence, sanded for days and applied an oil based varnish to give the faded gentility this room deserved. Hand finished gloss enamel on the ceiling beams. No secret just hard work and experience.
